Nokia N97 - A review of te latest Nokia "N" family phone

"Nokia N97 was released on 9-June 2009 in the United States. Nokia is one of the giant in the mobile phone marked and also one of the most experienced. They're well known for their robustness, durability and features rich contents. Nokia N97 includes the biggest screen (touch-display) ever included in their mobile phone family!. This is the review of Nokia N97 "

OK, first of all let's look at this smart phones specifications in a brief. In dimensions the phone is about 117 mm long, around 55 mm in width and about 15.9 (almost 16) mm of depth. This is really a thin phone in comparison with the disappointing N95 model.

As I said earlier this phone includes a larger display (3.5 inch) which runs a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. One of my biggest disappointments with the old N95 model was the color depth. But with the introduction of N97 Nokia has added 16 million colored display which really looks stunning! including many other features such as brightness controls, an ambient light detector etc.

An impressive 32GB of storage which can be upgraded in the future up to 16GB by using a internal memory unit (microSD). The slide-out keyboard  with this mobile phone is also handy but its not that easy to get used it and typing is not easy as Nokia claims. Specially reaching for the keys at the both ends I felt a bit uneasy.

Yes and the camera. The embedded camera on the unit is 5 mega pixels in technical specifications and takes of pictures of 2584 x 1938 HD images (JPEG/EXIF - still images). And can support 4x digital zooming capability. The other small camera for video calling facilities supports resolutions up to 176 x 144 in pixles. The LED flash (dual) and also the auto-focus functions are there too.

In comparison wit the iPhone 3GS the Nokia N97 uses a much slower processor which runs at 400Mhz (iPhone 3GS - 600Mhz) thus capable of video playback of 640 x 360 (MPEG-4, .mp4 and 3GP formats are supported). The music functions include supporting wide variety of playbacks such as MP3, AAC, WMA and eAAC (up to 320 kbps bit rate) and also a FM radio included.

Some games are available through their website but I must confess they are far behind iPhone 3GS again could be because of the low end processor N97 uses and also the default 128MB of RAM. The GPS function is also really impressive. The default maps are preloaded to the phone so can be viewed quickly and the NokiaMaps lets you easily download other maps to your Nokia N97 mobile phone without a hassle and their Maps are better than Google Maps!

And the network solutions includes pretty much everything such as GPS, GPRS, HSDPA , WCDMA, WiFi.  N97 can also be used as a HSDPA modem also. It features a 1500mAH Nokia BP-4L and I'm satisfied with it. If untouched (most of the time) I'm pretty sure it'll run for few days.

Anyway all in all the New device is a really good phone. Apart from a few problems with the keyboard smooth web browsing, quality audio and video, a great 5Mpx camera, a big top quality display with 16 million colors plus almost all type of embedded network functions it's a bit pricey but Nokia N97 includes real quality stuff from the manufacture. Well done!
